Similarities and Difference in regards to my communication skills….

One major thing that surpised me in regards to my communication evaluation is that I am a better listener at work than at home.  At first I was sad and hurt but I now view it as an eye opener to be a better communicator at home.  I also loved how my coworkers view my communication skills they really made me feel special.

Professional Hopes and Goals….

One hope that I have when it comes to working with families and children that comes from diverse backgrounds is that I am open and respectful to their culture and customs.

One goal that I would like to have set for the early childhood education field in regards to diversity is that the offer the teachers more diversity trainings.  I think this will truly help us with communicating with our families that are from a different culture.

I personally would like to thank my colleagues for reading my blog posts I truly hope they were insightful and interesting.

Microaggressions

An example of microaggression that I can recall happened when I was in college and I was shopping a beauty supply store the owners followed me around the store.  I assume that they believed that I was going to steal because I was a African American female.  This really hurt me because I believed that we were past this type of racism.  I think that they see how the news portrays some African Americans and assumed that I was going to steal from their store.

A child from a diverse background…..

The student that I have in my class that is from a diverse background is from Nigeria,Africa

She is very shy and timid and is often time playing alone.  I encourage her to engage in small group activities with other children so that she can learn from them and they can learn from her also.  Her parents speak both English and their native language.  I enjoy speaking with them about their childs day although sometimes I feel that its hard to understand their speech.

1. I will learn more about their customs

2 I will try to learn their language

3 I will ask them questions about their culture

4 I will be open to any type of ideas that they have

5 I will be respectful

Personal Side of bias, prejudice, or oppression

I do have a memory of prejudice it occurred when I was in college I went into a beauty shop to get a few things well the store clerk were watching my every move and assumed that I was going to steal from their store.  I was very ignored and decided to leave without buying anything because I felt that the only reason they were watching me is because they believed that because I was a young black female that I was going to steal.  My personal side of oppression is growing up because we were poor the other kids picked at me and my siblings this really hurt me but made me stronger too because I learned how to work hard in life in order to achieve success in life so that my children would not be subjected to poverty.

A friend from a different cultural…..

I interview my close friend and asked her the following questions she is from Nigeria.

Her definition of diversity is people who have different culture and values from another person

Her definition of culture is the way people believe or their way of life.

Hearing her definition of these two words help me understand that what we are learning in class is very important because their are different ways to say the same things.

Major Catastrophe……

The three items that I would take would be the following:

1. Bible

2. Family Photo

3. Recipe of my favorite dish.

I would explain that the bible is for my religious beliefs and the family photo is for a memory and the recipe of my favorite dish is something that I would want past down to my children.

I would be hurt if I was only allowed to keep the recipe and not the bible or family photo because this is a reminder of my family.

International Early Childhood Field….

The three consequences that I have about learning about the international early childhood education field is one that I compare their early childhood education field to ours here in America. Secondly, the fact that they may have more programs that help students benefits. Thirdly that some student do not receive the same early childhood education that we have here in America.  One goal that I have is for each child to receive a quality early childhood education.

Quality in early childhood education field….

The issue of pay for teachers have been discussed in my area because most teachers in this field feels underappreciated because they are not receiving a good pay.  There are lots of training on different issues in early childhood education that are available for teachers.  Also more training for professional development is needed.  My professional goals is to be a director of a center one day. Some hopes that I have is that every child will have a opportunity to quality education.

The e-blog that I explored this week is Education Week.  On this website there are different articles related to early childhood education.  It does provide insight about the early childhood education field especially about the quality of different programs that help children in these programs.  One article in particular is about the White House continual work to ensure that children receive adequate funding for early childhood education programs.
